When a homeowner in Canada first reached out to us, they didn’t send a brief or a spec sheet. They sent us a photo of their backyard at night — taped lines on the concrete and the words “13 feet, center of post” scrawled in chalk. That image said everything we needed to know: this was someone who had been thinking about this project for a while, measuring it in their head, and finally decided to make it real.
That’s the kind of project we enjoy most.
The Backyard: A Great Canvas With a Specific Challenge
The property is a classic Canadian suburban home — two-story red brick, stamped concrete patio wrapping around a kidney-shaped swimming pool. There’s a gas BBQ station by the back door, a set of sliding glass doors opening onto the patio, and the kind of generous outdoor space that just begs to be used more.

The challenge was straightforward but meaningful: the patio was already beautifully finished, the pool was in use, and the family wanted an outdoor structure that could handle Canadian weather — summer sun that gets intense, sudden afternoon rain, and the wind that cuts through when the season turns. They also wanted privacy from the neighboring fence line, and they wanted the whole thing to look intentional, not like an afterthought bolted onto the house.
The customer measured the available space precisely. Their tape-on-concrete layout told us the column footprint, and from there we got to work.

Design Phase: Getting the Details Right Before Cutting a Single Piece
We don’t start fabrication until the customer has signed off on a 3D model that shows exactly what they’ll receive. For this project, we developed a full set of renderings from multiple angles so the homeowner could visualize the structure against their actual house facade.
The final design: 7,804mm × 3,960mm footprint, with a standing height of 2,650mm — substantial enough to feel like a proper outdoor room, not a carport.
Color: Anthracite grey throughout. The customer wanted the structure to complement the dark roof tiles and contrast cleanly against the brick — a good call.

The design incorporated three distinct systems working together:
1. Motorized louvered roof — adjustable aluminum blades that rotate to control sunlight angle and close fully when rain starts. No getting up to manually adjust anything; one button handles it.
2. Side retractable roller blinds — drop-down screens on the open sides, providing shade and privacy without blocking airflow entirely when partially raised.
3. Decorative louver partition wall — fixed on the rear-facing side, this panel (915mm + 1,830mm + 915mm sections) creates a solid architectural backdrop. The customer planned to mount a TV in the center section — something we accounted for in the panel layout.



The photorealistic render below was particularly useful during the approval stage — it gave the customer a clear sense of how the completed pergola would sit against the brick exterior and open lawn.

Once the customer confirmed the design, dimensions, and color, we locked the order and moved to production.
Material & Structure: Why We Use 6063-T5 Aluminum
We use 6063-T5 aluminum alloy across all structural components — posts, beams, louver blades, and partition frames. For customers outside China, this matters for a few reasons:
- Corrosion resistance without coatings doing all the work. 6063-T5 has inherent oxidation resistance, and when combined with a powder-coat finish, it holds up in coastal humidity, poolside chlorine exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles common to Canadian winters.
- Weight-to-strength ratio. A 7.8-meter span needs beams that can carry the louver mechanism, motor components, and accumulated water load from a rain event. We size our profiles accordingly — these aren’t thin-walled extrusions.
- Dimensional stability. Unlike steel, aluminum doesn’t expand/contract enough to cause joint issues over years of seasonal temperature swings.
The motor system uses a standard 24V DC actuator compatible with common smart home protocols, so the customer can integrate it with their existing home automation if they choose to.
Packaging & Dispatch: Built for 10,000+ km
Shipping a 7.8-meter structure overseas requires more than bubble wrap and a prayer. Every component is pre-cut to length, disassembled, and packed to meet international container transport limits — typically no single piece exceeds 5.8 meters.
For this shipment, we used reinforced wooden crate packaging: a timber frame cradle with internal cross-bracing, foam padding on all profile contact points, and stretch-wrap binding around the full assembly. The goal is for components to arrive in the same condition they left our warehouse — no dents, no scratches on the powder coat, no bent louver blades.

We send the customer a packing list with photos of each numbered crate before the container is sealed. When the shipment arrives, there’s no guesswork about which crate contains what.

What This Project Illustrates
Every backyard is different. This customer had a finished patio, a pool to work around, specific privacy requirements, and a clear visual style in mind. Off-the-shelf pergola kits don’t solve that. What solved it was a back-and-forth design process, accurate 3D visualization before any metal was cut, and manufacturing that could execute the exact dimensions the site required.
We’ve been doing this for over 17 years. The tape-on-concrete photo isn’t unusual — it’s actually one of our favorite ways to start a conversation, because it means the customer has thought it through and knows what they want. Our job is to take that and build it right.
